How close does 0000 cut?

0000 is a bald-fade size. Closed down it takes hair very close to the scalp; opened on the lever it gives you room to blend upward.

Do I need to align it after fitting?

Yes. After any blade change, set the cutting blade level with or just behind the still blade before you cut, and oil across the full edge.
