Twelve pencils, six white and six black, so there is always one at the station.

A barber pencil marks your line on the skin before you commit the blade. Use it to map a lineup, set a beard edge, plan a part or sketch a design, then cut to the mark and wipe away what is left. This is the twelve-pack, which is how a working shop should buy them.

  • See the line before you cut it — the cheapest way there is to stop a lineup going wrong.
  • Six white and six black, so you have contrast on any skin tone and any hair colour.
  • Marks wipe and wash off, so a mistake on the pencil costs you nothing.
  • Twelve in the pack: one per chair, one in the travel kit, spares in the drawer.
  • Essential for hair designs and parts, where freehanding the first pass is how designs go crooked.
  • Also used for mapping in scalp micropigmentation work.
  • Costs less than a single ruined lineup.

Questions Barbers Ask

What colours come in the pack?

Six white and six black. White is the one you will reach for most — it shows on dark hair and on darker skin tones, which is where the majority of lineup and design work happens. Black earns its place on light hair, grey hair and fair skin, where a white mark disappears.

Does it come with a sharpener?

No. Sharpen with any standard pencil sharpener. If you want a pencil with a sharpener built into the cap, that is Scalpmaster's Hair Design Pencils — a different item.

Will the mark come off the client's skin?

Yes, that is the point. Mark it, cut to the line, wipe it clean.

Why not just freehand it?

Plenty of barbers do. But a pencil line is free to erase and a blade line is not, and on a design or a first-time client that asymmetry matters. Most barbers who start using one on designs keep using it.

Can I use these for scalp micropigmentation mapping?

Yes. The same wipe-off marking is what makes them useful for laying out a hairline before treatment.

How long does one pencil last?

Longer than you would think — you are laying down a thin line, not colouring in. A twelve-pack is a season's supply for most chairs, which is why it is worth buying the box rather than singles.

Why Barbers Love It

It is the least glamorous thing on the station and one of the highest-return. A dollar of pencil prevents the redo that costs you twenty minutes and a client's confidence.
