Is this an upgrade from the SilkCut?

No — it is a sideways move for a different job. SilkCut has a convex blade and comes with a thinner; it is the all-rounder. FineCutPRO has thin, pointy blades and comes with a razor; it is the detail shear. If you already run a SilkCut, this is a second shear, not a replacement.

Are the blades convex?

Olivia Garden does not say so. They describe SilkCut, SwivelCut and SwivelPro as hand-honed convex, and describe FineCutPRO as "special thin and pointy." That is a real difference in how they present it, so we are not going to write convex on this one.

What is it best at?

Point cutting, graduation, hairlines and around the ears — anywhere you need the tip of the shear rather than the belly.
