A #6 leaves 3/4 of an inch, roughly 19mm.

Why do my longer guards leave ridges?

Almost always because the comb is flexing or lifting mid-pass. Keep the guard flat against the head, work slower on longer lengths, and replace any comb that has gone soft at the tip.

Is it worth buying singles instead of a set?
